Tips and tricks

Since one of the goals of this newsletter is to provide information about using AnswerTool more efficiently, we will be including tips and tricks in this section. If you have any tips or tricks you wish to share with fellow AnswerTool users, please send them to us.

Our tip for this issue concerns copying answers between questions. To copy text from one answer to the next, you normally select the answer, then select or create the question where you will copy the answer. If you have the "automatically copy to clipboard" option selected you will notice that when you select the destination, it wipes out the clipboard. While it is expected that AnswerTool will do this because of how the automatic copy option works, this is not the desired behavior in this case. The solution is to temporarily disable the "automatically copy to clipboard" option in the program preferences.

Tell us what you think about this problem. Do you frequently copy text between answers? Do we need to make this process easier?

One thing to keep in mind is that with the QuickPaste feature in AnswerTool 2.1, (described below) the automatic copy option becomes less important and depending on your requirements you may be able to leave it disabled permanently.

AnswerTool 2.1 beta 1

We are pleased to announce AnswerTool 2.1 beta 1. We listened to you and made a number of improvements which we believe will make AnswerTool even more useful. Here are some of the highlights:

  • QuickPaste. Not only does this improve the speed at which you use AnswerTool, but dramatically improves integration with other software. Instead of switching to AnswerTool, selecting a question, switching back to your application, then pressing Paste, with QuickPaste you just press the hot key combination, select the question, and press Enter. The answer is automatically pasted into your application. You can even paste multiple answers in a row.

  • QuickCopy. Makes creating your answer files even easier. Copy your answer to the clipboard and press the QuickCopy hot key. This captures the answer from the clipboard and allows you to easily create the entire question and answer combination.

  • Open from the Web. In addition to having your files on a LAN, now you can store answer files on the Internet and open them by specifying the URL or dragging an Internet Shortcut into the AnswerTool window.

There have been a large number of other minor improvements, and those are detailed in the release notes.

This beta release is believed to be stable, but we still wanted to run a short public beta just to work out any problems we may not have caught. Because this is a beta release, it is not available through the built-in Check for Updates command. Please visit the beta download page at

Upcoming product: FAQTool

Almost everyone has a FAQ on their web site, but how often does it actually get updated? FAQTool is our upcoming product for auto- matically generating and maintaining the FAQ pages on your web site. FAQTool generates single and multi-page FAQs, creates your table of contents, and includes a built-in FTP client that can automatically upload the FAQ to your web site. You can use one of the included templates, modify one, or create your own from scratch to get exacly the look you want.

Here's the best part: Whenever you need to change anything in the FAQ, whether it's changing a single answer, rearranging questions or topics, changing the entire look and feel, or changing from a single page FAQ to multiple pages, it's all as simple as checking off a few options and running through the FAQ generator wizard. Of course FAQTool can import your AnswerTool files, so you can easily generate FAQs from the answer files you already have.

We currently anticipate a FAQTool beta in late May or early June. Keep watching this space for the announcement.

By now you're probably thinking, "where is the AnswerTool FAQ?" Well, we're working on it. Actually, it appears that using AnswerTool is so easy that we just don't get many questions about the software. Do you have a question that you think we should answer in the FAQ? Please send it to us.
