Where can I download a free trial?

You can download a free trial of AnswerTool at
   http://www.answertool.com/download.html

The AnswerTool trial software is fully-functional for up to 15 consecutive days after installation.  If it does not meet your needs, simply uninstall the software and pay nothing!  (Of course we would appreciate you telling us what we could have done to meet your requirements.)

Is AnswerTool compatible with my email software?

AnswerTool works with all email software that we know of.  It uses the clipboard to transfer answers, so all you have to do is select the "Paste" function in your email program to include the answers in your email responses.

Where can I get AnswerTool beta releases?

AnswerTool beta releases are available at
  http://www.answertool.com/beta.html

Ordering

Is it safe to order online?

Yes!  We have been doing business on the Internet since 1997 and have earned a reputation for safe online shopping.  Your online order is entered and processed through our own secure server with 128-bit SSL encryption.  We use CyberCash as our payment gateway, and our credit card processor is Cardservice International, a company that handles over US$12 billion in annual volume.

Upgrading

What is your upgrade policy?

All AnswerTool licenses include free upgrades within the same major release.  For example, if the current version of AnswerTool is 2.1 and you purchase it today, then there is no additional charge for any future AnswerTool 2.x releases(2.2, 2.3, and so on).  When AnswerTool 3.0 is released then you will have the option to upgrade at a significant discount off the regular price.

Basic Operations

How do I copy from one answer to another answer?

The problem is that selecting a question with the automatic clipboard copy option enabled will wipe out anything that was previously on the clipboard.  Therefore to copy text from one answer to another, disable the automatic copy to clipboard option in the program preferences.  (Options->Preferences->General)  Then you will be able to use the Edit->Copy and Edit->Paste commands as expected.

How do I prevent a file from being modified?

To prevent a file from being modified you should mark it read-only from the Windows file manager.

Why does AnswerTool not have a Print function?

Only AnswerTool versions prior to 2.1 do not have a print function.  Starting with AnswerTool 2.1 we have added a Print command under the File menu that prints the currently selected answer.

Technical

Why must I have Internet Explorer 5.5 or later installed?

AnswerTool requires IE 5.5 or later because we use it as the HTML editor and display component.  Therefore only the browser itself is required.  We don't use Outlook Express for anything, so if you do not use it as your email client you may opt not to install it when you install the IE browser itself.

Can I use AnswerTool over the network?

Yes.  AnswerTool files can easily be shared over a LAN, and starting with AnswerTool 2.1 they can be shared over the Internet as well.

Can you read .ansr files with any other software?

Our upcoming FAQTool software will be able to read .ansr files.  However since the .ansr files are standard XML files, you can easily convert them to other formats using XSLT or similar tools.

Is AnswerTool based on HTML Workshop?

Not at all, but we do use the Internet Explorer browser engine for certain features.

Why am I getting a "you have too many copies running" error?

A single-user license only allows a single instance of AnswerTool to be running.  To run multiple copies of AnswerTool at the same time, you will need a multi-user license or multiple single-user licenses, all of which can be purchased at http://www.answertool.com/order.html.

When running with multiple single-user licenses, you must make sure that the a single-user license key is entered only on one machine.  (Entering the same single-user license key on more than one machine will cause the "you have too many copies" error.)  To enter a new single-user license on another machine, shut down AnswerTool on the first machine, then on the second machine select Help->Enter License Key and enter the second license.

How did you generate this FAQ?

We generated this FAQ by taking an existing AnswerTool answer file (one that we already use to answer technical support by email) and importing into FAQTool, which is our companion product for AnswerTool.  FAQTool can take an answer file and generate a FAQ for the web or for printing using simple template files.

The FAQTool public beta is launching soon.  Sign up for the AnswerTool mailing list and you will be notified when it is available.
